Camping World Holdings Inc., the worlds largest recreational vehicle RV dealer, has announced plans to close 27 to 37 retail locations that do not focus on RV sales or services. This move is part of a strategic refocus on the companys core RV business.
The Lincolnshire, Illinoisbased company stated that the closures will affect stores primarily selling outdoor lifestyle products, such as hunting, fishing, and camping gear. These locations are either being sold, repurposed, relocated, or shut down entirely. Camping World currently operates 165 locations that sell or service RVs.
We believe the sale andor servicing of recreational vehicles is our core and most important offering, said Camping World Chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis. With the RV and outdoor consumer crossover, we believe there is an opportunity to continue growing our market share and improve our financial performance through the operation of locations with RV sales andor service. citeturn0search0
The decision comes amid a downturn in the RV industry. As of early August, RV shipments were down more than 23 yearoveryear in July, following a 4.1 decline in 2018, according to data from the RV Industry Association. Economists often view shipments of RVs and other luxury items as indicators of the overall health of the U.S. economy. Multiyear declines in RV shipments have occurred before each of the last three recessions.
Camping Worlds stock has also been affected, with shares down more than 40 so far this year. The company reported a 6.3 decline in new vehicle sales, totaling 22,906 units, in its secondquarter earnings. citeturn0search0
Despite the closures, Camping World remains committed to expanding its RV dealership network. The company recently announced the acquisition of seven RV dealership locations from Lazydays Holdings, with the deal valued at approximately 10 million to 20 million. These locations generated nearly 200 million in revenue over the past year. citeturn0search4
Additionally, Camping World opened its 200th RV dealership in Van Buren, Arkansas, following the acquisition of Breeden RV. The company aims to increase its store count by 50 over the next five years through acquisitions and new store openings. citeturn0search7
This strategic shift underscores Camping Worlds focus on strengthening its position in the RV market while scaling back on less profitable retail segments.
